Artist's Comments

The title is a play of words on "The Devil and Daniel Webster". The Snake is of course Jake Featherston, president of the Confederate States of America and leader of the Freedom Party in Harry Turtledove's Timeline 191 series. Upper-level Party Members call him "Sarge" (after his rank during the Great War), everyone else (but mostly the Damnyankees) Cockney Slang him as "The Snake". No comparaison to Charlie Chaplin in this timeline.

Clarence Potter, an intelligence officer, knew Featherston from the war, and watched the fall and rise of The Snake from another angry, bigotted Reb to the most feared man on the American continent. Hopefully, you'll be able to see why I chose that "playful" title...

I originally penciled this back in 2005, but was unsatisfied by the "tube" sleeves. After completing McSweeney's MoH [link] , I went over this one, correcting all the elements, and inking it.

I spent a lot more time on the Gordon McSweeney piece than I did on this one...

Then again, there's a difference in doing a wall and doing a battlefield...

Good work. I really like the uniform design. The Snake's well designed as well, a lean, rough face as described in the books. Potter gets an interesting expression due to his reflecting glasses.

It was simply a map that I found on the web. Either at one of those antiquity auction sites or a cartography site...
