Description
A different take on the artwork for the 2011 edition of CanGames, Canada's longest-running gaming convention. Role-playing, board gaming, miniatures, cards, all are welcome.

The theme that year was "Blood and Iron". I had a number of ideas, but in the end went with a fantasy take on the Battle on the Ice from Sergei Eisentstein's Alexander Nevsky. The dragon is also meant to invoke the logo of a local gaming store, Fandom II.

This second piece was because I thought a black dragon would work better with the Teutonic Knights than with Prince Alexander Nevsky. Beside the fact that the Teutonic Knights are viewed as the villains in that war, it also plays into Eisenstein's analogy of the then upcoming conflict between the Nazis and the Soviet Union since the dragon makes a perfect Stuka expy. But it wasn't chosen, and you can't see Nevsky's shield anyways.
